New York and Chicago At least in baseball they have the decency to put the sister-teams in opposite leagues (AL vs NL), unlike in the NHL where the Rangers and Islanders not only share the same league and conference, but division for crying out loud!
2) How many points are awarded for a safety in the National Football League?
2 points Before adopting the college rule for 2-point conversions following a touchdown, safeties were the culprit whenever you'd see a wacky final football score like 11-5 (which I'm not sure I've ever actually seen, but it'd clearly be a hard score to achieve if you could only get points in 3s and 6s and 7s). Now, Human Calculator Jim Hinckley could rattle off a bunch of actual safety-tainted final scores, but that's only because he's never learned to use his powers for good.
3) Who won the Stanley Cup in 2005?
Tampa Bay Lightning No, I'm serious! C'mon, stop laughing.. it was the team from Tampa, Florida (and they deserved it). It just seemed... wrong?... to have the Cup handed over to a city that never sees snow. But not to worry: things got back to normal the next year, when the Cup moved all the way back up north to.. Raleigh, North Carolina? Gah, I give up!
4) Who holds the current MLB record for most homeruns in a season, and how many homeruns did he hit?
Barry Bonds, 73 Look, you don't have to like the guy, and you don't have to believe that he wasn't all steroided up when he hit all those dingers, but you do have to accept that he holds the record. At least until the powers that be come to their senses and strike Bonds' stats from the record book. Until then, keep sending in your cards and letters!
5) Who was the first non-Original Six NHL team to win a Stanley Cup?
Philadelphia Flyers A mere 6 years after expanding beyond the half-dozen teams it'd had for decades, a new kid on the block took home the chalice to the city of brotherly love. And then did it again the next year. And it's never been the same since, with more Cups won by new teams since than by the Habs, Wings and Rangers in the ensuing 32 years.
6) Who holds the National Basketball Assocation record for most points in a game?
Wilt Chamberlain In 1962, Wilt the Stilt scored 100 points in a game. With no 3-pointers. 100 points. In a game! It sounds like his teammates were serving them up to him by the end of the game, but still! Even Jordan peaked at 69 pts in a game (Kobe Bryant is 2nd behind Chamberlain at 81 pts) and those guys had 3-pointers to boost their totals.
7) In what year did Denver finally win a major sports championship?
1996 Something of a trick question in some circles, the right answer is 1996, courtesy of Patrick Roy and the Avalanche. But of course the city of Denver really made it to the big time a year and a half later, in January of 1998, when John Elway lead the Broncos to the first of back to back SuperBowls. But c'mon.. hockey counts! It does!!
8) Who did the New York Yankees beat to win their most recent World Series title?
New York Mets We already established that New York has 2 MLB teams, right, so this should've been easy! Oh wait, maybe not. After all, while you might remember the winners, who can ever recall the losers (see the next question for more of the same)? The year was 2000, and it was the Subway Series. A year later the Yankees would be back in the Series, only a month and a bit after September 11th, but would fall just short when the Diamondbacks upset them in Game 7.
9) Name the four teams, in order, that the New York Islanders defeated in winning their four consecutive Stanley Cups.
Philadelphia Flyers, Minnesota North Stars, Vancouver Canucks, Edmonton Oilers I'll come right out and say it: if you got this one without cheating, I'm impressed! Remembering 4 losers from that long ago (take that Islanders fans!) is pretty impressive. Oh sure, I know that sort of stuff like I know the back of my hand, but I'm stupid that way. Just like I know the Black Panther joined the Avengers after Hercules but before the Black Knight. Well, duh!
By the way: It occurred to me overnight that I hadn't explained, for question 1), why I didn't include Los Angeles in the list of cities that have 2 MLB teams. If you look at the team names, for example, you'll see LA Dodgers and LA Angels. But of course the Angels are actually the LA Angels of Anaheim, which is not only a very wacky team name, but also an indication that they don't really play out of LA. Apparently they just like having LA in their name.
A few things.
