Of all the Spider-Man 3 reviews I've read since getting home from the theatre yeaterday afternoon - and I've read a lot! - this one is my favourite so far. Warning: It contains many plot spoilers, so don't follow the link unless you want some stuff spoiled! What I liked most about it were the comments the reviewer had to make about Gwen, and her place in the Spider-Man mythos. Here're a couple spoiler-free excerpts that nearly made me cheer:
"Indeed, Spider-Man 3 betrays loudly the fact I suspect all Spider-Man fans know to be absolutely true: Mary Jane sucks and Gwen Stacy rules. In not one of the Spider-Man films - and even the Spider-Man comics as far this writer is concerned - is it ever made clear why Peter is so unflinchingly obsessed with Mary Jane Watson and her relentless narcissism and whining..."
and
"On the other hand there's Gwen Stacy, portrayed by Bryce Dallas Howard as intelligent, kind, compassionate and of upstanding character. Also, she's really hot and works as a model because people actually enjoy seeing her, unlike the apparently talentless and much-reviled Mary Jane Watson."
Amen, brother! Here's hoping Spider-Man 4 restores Gwen's rightful place and is subtitled Peter Finds True Love!
