The Good News: I wasn't watching last night's CBC broadcast of the Rangers/Leafs game from Toronto (Vicki and I were catching up on our TV watching from the previous week, as I recall). Therefore I didn't blow a blood vessel when the boys from New York gave up 5 goals in just over 5 minutes to turn a 2-0 3rd period lead into a 5-2 loss. So there's that, at least!
The Bad News: For a team that has gotten to where it is right now - atop the NHL standings, at least for the moment - by playing a solid, some would say boring style of defense, giving up an explosion of goals like that is very troubling. With little in the way of scoring punch in their lineup this season (Jagr-less, Shanahan-less, etc), if the Rangers can't keep the puck out of their own net, they're going to sink right down to the bottom third of the standings where they spent most of their time between 1998 and 2004. And that's a scary prospect, indeed! The Leafs apparently completely undressed the defensive 'prowess' of their opponents toward the end of that game, and that bodes ill for the future if it was anything but a temporary mental breakdown on the part of the Blueshirts.

I thought it was as much a backup goalie meltdown as it was a defensive collapse. Provided Lundqvist stays healthy that shouldn't be a huge problem...
