No Sundin For The Rangers

Despite it being called a two-team race toward the end, the Rangers did not land Mats Sundin as a free agent (the Canucks did). Considering the salary cap issue New York would've faced if they had been able to sign Sundin, I'm not entirely sure that his going with Vancouver is such a bad thing for the Rangers. I guess only time, and the results of the rest of the season, will say for sure. At least he didn't sign with another Eastern Conference team!

A couple of things. I found it funny how the two front runners for him were the 1994 Stanley Cup Finalists (although it's just coincidence).

Secondly, from what I understand, Sundin didn't want to go to a city that had to ditch other people to add him (which the Rangers clearly would have had to do in terms of salary, etc). He also didn't want to go to a team where HE was the final piece of their puzzle. I don't know if that was the case in New York, but if they couldn't afford to bring Shanahan back, how in hell could they bring in Sundin?!?!?

Vancouver has seemed to get their money situation to a point where they could pay Sundin $5 million this year, and STILL have $6 million left to get someone else!

Only time will tell how this works out. I, too, and glad that he went to the West (and Boston has already played Vancouver this year -- 1-0 win over the Canucks by the way).
