Short Term Planning

Hot on the heels of yesterday's re-signing of Brendan Shanahan to a one-year deal comes the news today that the Rangers have similarly retained their # 1 goalie, Henrik Lundqvist, with a new, single-year contract. The brevity of the Shanahan renewal doesn't surprise me - he's not a spring chicken anymore - but it's very disappointing that they couldn't do a longer term deal with King Henry. Next season's shaping up to be a "make or break" one, since I think Jagr's only signed through one more year as well.

Sigh.

With the signing of Henrik Lundqvist today the New York Rangers sit at a cap number just shy of $52 million heading into the 07/08 season. To be exact, they're about $1.4 over the cap and they still need to sign restricted free agents Sean Avery and Marcel Hossa. As you said, next year should prove interesting with plenty of BIG names coming up for renewal around the league.

I thought Jagr still had 2 more years left, but I could be wrong.

Ah, you're right, Boneman. I was thinking it expired after 2007/08, but I just checked and it runs through 2008/09, which is the season after next. Good catch!
