Breaking the Internet in Half

When we were watching this week's episode of Heroes, one of the characters makes the comment that such-and-such is going to break the Internet in half. My ears immediately perked up, because I associate that phrase with something that Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada said, by way of ultra-hype, within the last couple years (I think it was in reference to the death of Hawkeye in the vastly overrated House of M mini-series, but I'm not 100% sure). The fact that this exact expression showed up outside of comics made me wonder if perhaps Joe had simply used an existing but unknown-to-me PopCultRef when I originally read it earlier. I actually said as much to Vicki, after hearing it on Heroes, and then promptly forgot about it again.

Last night I was reading this week's Joe Fridays column (go to the very bottom of the article for the specific exchange on this topic) on Newsarama and lo and behold, it was a Joe Quesada original! It should be interesting to see if being used on Heroes is enough to propel this expression into the general public's collective subconscious or not. We may actually be present at the birth of a new PopCultRef, folks, if it catches on!
