Two of the shows we watch (Standoff, and Law & Order: Criminal Intent) featured stories this past week in which a kidnapping is broadcast over the Internet. And, in both of them, the mastermind behind the job loses control of it, as another one of the kidnappers pulls a fast one and takes over. But wait, there's more! Both of the kidnappings turned out to be hoaxes, in one way or another: one was just intended to terrify the victims, not really hurt them, and the other was completely staged, with all involved simply following a script (up to a point).
When two different shows have such similar stories in them, I tend to wonder: was there something like this in the real world, and I just didn't hear about it? Often the storylines of the Law & Order shows are inspired by actual events, after all, so it wouldn't be a stretch to think this one was. But it didn't ring any bells for me. Or is this just a sort of inevitable outcome that script writers have tapped into, because everyone knows that something like it will happen eventually based on the direction YouTube, blogging and the like are going?

Makes you wonder about Rising Stars and Heroes, or Deep Impact and Armageddon, doesn't it?
I think in this case it can be explained rationally. You see, there was recently a bit of a world-wide mystery on YouTube with lonelygirl15. She was a very pretty, young girl video blogging about the tribulations of her life. The blogs were very well produced. For months people speculated about whether she was for real or not. Turns out she was just an actress hired by a dotcom production team. Anyways, she wasn't kidnapped or anything - but I'm pretty sure this and similar events were the impetus for these 2 episodes.
That said, hasn't the thing about ideas being "tappable" once entered into the common human subconcious that connects us all? Or I probably just read some speculative but very strange findings/coincidences in a book.
t: Synchronicity?
Many miles away there's a shadow on the door of a cottage on the shore of a dark Scottish lake....
