I'm starting this entry with about five minutes left in the game, and the Colts up by 12 and getting the ball back on downs. All of which should mean that this one's essentially over, especially considering how poorly the Bears have done at gaining yards since the first quarter. But, notwithstanding the disparity in yardage, it remained a close game, with the Bears even leading for a good chunk of the first half. In fact, when it was 14-6 Chicago early, and they were driving, it looked like it could be headed for another big Indy deficit at the half, like the one they had to overcome in the AFC Championship game against New England. Certainly returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown seemed to suggest the Bears were going to roar. And if you like turnovers, you loved this one! It set a record for most turnovers in the first quarter of a SuperBowl - 4 of them, 2 each way - and Bears QB Rex Grossman pretty much threw his team's chances away in the fourth quarter with picks on back-to-back drives.
I'm kind of glad to see Peyton Manning finally get his championship ring, if for no other reason than because he's provided so many entertaining moments over the past decade. I love his chaotic style at the line, ranging back and forth, barking out signals and changing the play based on what he's seen in the defence. And unlike some who've taken their turn in the big show spotlight, he's definitely paid his dues in the league, and did so long before he ever got his first chance to play for a ring. It'll be interesting to see how he does next season, after finally losing the Playoff Choker label, and doing it with a team that actually could play some defence (at least in the playoffs).
Final Score: Indianapolis 29, Chicago 17
My final record in picking NFL playoff games this year: 5-6 (yeah, that's pretty bad).
