Yet another late post, but this time there were four of us playing online, so it went even later (plus it's Friday night so no one had work the next day). Anyway, here we are with only 4 days left before Lost resumes!
While I'm not a fan of the 'shock value death' in fiction, I think that allowing for the possibility that characters can die so as to keep the viewer/reader from getting complacent is a good technique. There have only been a handful of significant deaths so far on Lost, through a little over two seasons, but I definitely worry a bit more about everyone else as a result. I suppose Jack, Kate, Sawyer and maybe Locke are unlikely to be killed off anytime soon, but the rest are all probably considered expendable if the right plot opportunity arises... or the actor gets arrested for driving drunk in Hawaii!!
I'm definitely glad that Lost isn't one of those shows where nobody important ever dies, despite being in peril regularly. The last thing you need is the instantly-recognizable 'red shirt' approach, where new disposible men or women are brought into the story and you immediately know they're the ones that are going to buy it if there's going to be a killing!
